Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) is a Nigerian University in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, owned and run by the state government.
About Adekunle Ajasin University
Adekunle Ajasin University was founded as Obafemi Awolowo University in March 1982 by the government of old Ondo State, led by the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
The name was changed to Ondo State University in 1985 by Navy Commodore Michael Bamidele Otiko’s immediately succeeding military regime.
When a new state was formed in October 1996 from the old Ondo, it became necessary to move it to Akungba Akoko in the new Ondo State in 1999.
The bill supporting the relocation was passed into law by the then-Governor of the State, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, in November 1999, prompting the removal of a crop of workers from the former site in Ado-Ekiti to Akungba Akoko on December 1, 1999.
Following the death of Governor Ajasin, Governor Adefarati signed a bill to alter the university’s name yet again, this time to Adekunle Ajasin University, to honor the late Governor Ajasin.
The university’s modified and current statute was signed into law in November 2007 by yet another governor, former Governor Olusegun Agagu.
Given these circumstances, it is accurate to say that although AAUA’s history began in 1982, the second phase of its history began on November 5, 1999, when it relocated to its current location, Akungba Akoko.
