As a student in Nigeria, it can be tough to manage your studies while also working on a side hustle. But don’t worry, here are the tips for students to manage side hustles and balance both responsibilities in Nigeria.
You can manage your side hustle while studying in school by doing the following;
- Create a Daily Schedule
- Set Priorities
- Learn How to Say No
- Use Helpful Tools
- Take Short Breaks
These tips you are about to read come from my own experience, advice from friends, and lessons from old personal development books about school, education, and student side hustles.
1. Create a Daily Schedule That Works for You
Planning your school days will make life easier as a student trying to make ends meet because you’ll know which important tasks to do first that you will earn extra money.
Make a plan for your day that includes studying, working, and relaxing time.
This will help you stay organised and ensure you have enough time for everything you need to do to be financially independent.
2. Set Priorities Your Studies And Work
What really helped me during my time at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University was planning when to study and when to sell my services.
At the start of each semester, I focused on selling data and recharge cards (MNE Data Services) to boost my sales.
I noticed that at the start and middle of a semester, before test and exam time, students used their phones more, so the demand for data and recharge cards was high then.
What is most important to you, whether it’s getting good grades or earning money from your side hustle or part-time job?
Focus on what you need to do first and prioritize your tasks.
3. Learn How to Say No to Avoid Burnout
My first year at ATBU was terrible because I overworked my nerves. I was trying to fit in everywhere; you would find me joining any group and going to places I didn’t even want to be.
It was after I saw my 2nd semester result with 3 good carryovers that my eyes started to clear.
I became more selective about the activities I joined at school and changed my seatmates and friends. This shift motivated me to focus more on what truly mattered, my studies and side hustle business.
Say no to extra commitments if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Remember to take care of yourself and prioritise your mental and physical health.
4. Use Helpful Tools to Stay Organized
I appreciate the Notepad on my Samsung A30s because it helps me list my most important tasks. It helps me stay on track and prevents me from overworking or getting distracted.
There are plenty of apps and tools out there to help you stay organized and manage your time better.
Use planners, calendars, and to-do lists like Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, or Fabulous Daily Routine Planner to stay on top of your tasks and deadlines.
5. Take Short Breaks to Boost Your Energy
At first, I thought hard work meant avoiding rest and sleep all day long just to make sure I was selling my product or service and reading my books also.
That habit made me sleepy because I am always exhausted, tired, and lazy, making me decline in all the potential aspects of my life in school and what side hustles require.
Don’t forget to take breaks throughout the day to relax and recharge. This will help you stay focused and energized for both your studies and side hustle.
