Abdullahi, an Ahmadu Bello University Zaria student studying urban and regional planning, discusses his inspirations, including Eminem and John Legend, in this interview.
What gave rise to your stage name?
The Hausa term “ji” means “good boy,” which is what my mother always wanted me to be. Later, I chose to use it as my stage name.
What would you say about your artwork?
I’m an enthusiastic pop, R&B, and rapper. My work is eloquent; I write, sing, and rap about love and life.
What would you say about your entry into the music business?
My career began in 2011, when I went into the music business with some friends.
We reasoned that if other tribes could sing and rap in their tongues, then we could try Hausa rap, R&B, and pop.
We were fortunate to have YNS Studios Kaduna, a recording studio, at home, which allowed us to perform live.
Akon, P-Square, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and John Legend served as great inspirations for me. I’ve put some tunes on tape and distributed them.
I love you, baby. Daina Bina, Qusa Ft. Shamsy, Yar Fara Ft. Feezy, and Something are a few of them. Masoyiya Ta, Saboda Ke, and Mai Kudi are the others.
I shared the stage alongside artists like Yemi Alade, Ice Prince, MI, 2Face Idibia, and many more at the 2015 Kaduna Music Festival (KADAMFEST).
I also shared the stage with Dj AB, Feezy, Mr. Kebzee, Lil Prince, and other Yaran North Side performers.
The general public has acknowledged my efforts as well. I was given an award by Paki’s Collection in December 2018 for the popular song “Daina Bina.”
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, ABU Zaria, also gave me a merit award in 2018 for “Artist of the Year.”
Do you agree that living in Lagos is a prerequisite for becoming a successful businessperson?
I am aware that Lagos was formerly the most well-known location in Nigeria for music marketing, but things changed as time passed and technology advanced.
With the way the Internet is changing the Nigerian music industry, I now think it is still possible to pursue a successful music career here in the North and to advance somewhat without having to travel to other states.
It is now possible to distribute music digitally and sell it for a profit both domestically and abroad from any state in Nigeria.
I also think that we can succeed here in the North if society and the government support us.
Given that some people in the entertainment business are known to make enormous profits, how does music support you financially?
I’ve never imagined the places where music can take me, so we are grateful to God for his unceasing blessings. I became somebody as a result of it.
Though not to the level that people believe, the entertainment business does help to pay the bills.
All endeavors have their peaks and valleys; what are yours?
I’m a verified Nigerian artist on international music platforms like Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and Google Music, and my career is only getting started.
By God’s grace, I envision myself in five years as a multi-award-winning, internationally renowned Nigerian artist with numerous talents who have won Grammy Awards.
Why are there more Northerners doing modern music?
The majority select current music because they want it to be globally relevant. Still, since Hausa is widely spoken worldwide, I think Hausa musicians in Lagos will also get paid similarly to Yoruba, Igbo, and Igala musicians.
The international recognition of Hausa R&B, pop, and rap songs will come from the language’s globalization.
Why didn’t you go with classic music performed by artists like the renowned Mamman Shata?
We also wanted to stand out in the North, so we went with contemporary music.
There was always traditional music from the past, such as Mamman Shata and other pieces.
We want the North to have professional music standards; thus, I guess we are the first to sing traditional songs in a modern way.
I combine university studies with contemporary music (Geeboy).
Musician Abdullahi Abdullahi, better known as Geeboy, said that music makes him happy, and he is studying music at the university at the same time.

Or did the Yaran North Side break up?
It’s been two days since hearing their song together; what caused this?
We have spent two days listening to the songs of the famous Hausa hip-hop singer, Yaran North Side.
The Yaran North Side are musicians from the same house, and they are led by Faruk Abdullahi, who is known as Likitre.
Famous singers who are in the north of the country with their teams are Dj Abba, Teeswag, Jigsawmujee, and Geeboy with Feezy.
YNS, as they are called, have been entertaining northerners for a long time with their Hausa hip-hop music, and they play an important role in bringing out songs in the Hausa language to develop the culture of northerners.
The singers of the songs ‘Wabab’ and ‘Su baba ne’ and other songs have gone around every corner of the cities of the northern states and even other regions in the country.
They are babas, as they are called; they are like the voice of the northern youth in the field of music.
After the songs that they have done together for years, rumors are spreading that the singers have a rift between them because some of them think that they did not get the chance to show their talent to the public.
In the same way, we have been listening to the songs of the members of the YNS family, especially Dj Ab and Teeswag, because they are popular everywhere.
So we ask, does everyone in YNS get ahead of themselves by making music alone, or is it only those who have the talent to make music?
In an interview they did on the hip-hop program Arewa24, the North Side boys stated that their goal is to see their songs spread in any country in the world and to develop the culture of the northerners through their songs.
If there is a conflict between them, how will they achieve their goals?
We are proud of them, and we are not tired of hearing their songs. That’s why we want to explain the real reason why only a few people sing in their yard.
In one of their songs, Likitre released a verse that says, “People should come with their cups to be surprised because YNS has made an effort; we have come to surprise them.”.
We are ready to see the surprise.
