How did Yamu Baba come to be known as you?
Ibrahim Yamu Baba is my true name. My folks hail from Borno State’s Biu.
Being a public worker, my father was assigned to Jos, where I was born and raised. I was introduced to Kannywood in Jos.
Because of my fair complexion, a man named Lawal in the Jos neighborhood dubbed me Gangare, which is how I received the name Yamu. The name changed to Yamu Baba as I got older.
When did you begin working at Kannywood?
I believe I have worked in this field for twenty years. I’ve appeared in numerous music videos and acted in films.
Why did people only learn about Sambisa’s music video after all these years?
I appeared in a ton of other popular music videos, such as “Kauna” and “Suwaiti,” among many other well-known terms.
You know that whatever you accomplish has a certain period when it should be highlighted.
Thus, I believe that the Sambisa music video is mine.
After the first episode of the series, I gained a lot of popularity. It seemed miraculous. I give God thanks.
You appeared in another popular music video, “Jarumai,” after Sambisa. Do you prefer performing in music videos to appearing in motion pictures?
We also appeared in the music video for Jarumai. Similar to Sambisa, which was composed and recorded by Sani Liyaliya, the music was composed and recorded by Nakabala and Adamu.
The only reason they invited us to be in the video is that they have faith in our capacity to meet their needs.
We also produced numerous additional well-known music videos, including those for the songs “Mai corona,” “Matar soja,” “Mai Ciki,” and many more.
Can you tell us which movies you acted in before you started doing music?
I’ve performed in numerous films. Among my favorite movies are “Rabin Raina,” “Bakin Mulki,” “Ana Muslim,” “Gaushi,” “Sarkakiya,” and a plethora of others that are too many to list.
Which of the music videos you were in is your favorite?
I doubt that I could choose just one. I enjoy each one of them. Maybe my supporters will select me.
My goal is to consistently provide my audience with entertainment and to provide them with what they truly desire and value.
Do you sing yourself, or do you just sing in other people’s songs?
In addition, I play music. I write songs and perform them for political events, weddings, and other occasions.
I compose all kinds of music, with the possible exception of movie soundtracks, which I have never done previously.
However, funny music is more to my taste. Long before they saw me in roles, people were more familiar with me as a musician.
Thank God, I can sing any kind of music, and I listen to all kinds of music.
However, I’m focusing more on political subjects in my comedies so that I can contribute to raising my knowledge of politics and governance.
Being an actor, I also appear in other people’s music. I may therefore appear in any music video upon request as an actor.
If you were to choose between music and movies, which would you prefer?
I feel at ease performing both. However, I can now claim that music and music videos increase my income.
I wouldn’t be lying if I said that movies didn’t bring in money for me.
The foundation was filmed, which made me famous and wealthy.
But right now, music is making me more money—especially after the video for “Sambisa” was released.
In a short period, we received over a million views, and ever since, every video we uploaded has received a lot of attention and supportive comments.
Who serves as your role model?
To be honest with you, I learned music via trial and error, so I don’t have any role models in the field.
I became an instructor because I used to spend a lot of time in the studio observing musicians perform.
I became interested in it and began to practice, which is how I learned it.
However, I look up to Ali Nuhu in movies. I enjoy him and everything he does in business.
Could you tell us about your current success story since entering the field?
I give God praise for the victories thus far. I’ve received numerous honors and recognition from numerous organizations, including Intel.
And I have a lot of material possessions now because of this industry.
Considering how I entered the field and my current accomplishments, I can only give God praise.
I hardly ever go anywhere in any state in northern Nigeria without being acknowledged.
That in itself is a noteworthy accomplishment for which one ought to feel content.
What are you planning to do next?
My next goal is to become more well-known and well-liked.
My goal is to become more well-known because I want to establish a foundation that will assist the underprivileged and defenseless.
Every time I witness someone else happy, it makes me happy too. Making people’s lives easier with the money I make from movies is my next big life objective.
Tell us about the Sambisa music video that helped you gain notoriety.
It depicts me proposing marriage to Zainab Sambisa, a woman. She eventually agreed to marry me after much provocation, but only if the ceremony was held in Sambisa Forest, where she claimed to be from.
When I told her that, I began to make up excuses, like I beat women and I have three wives, but she insisted that she would still marry me. It was a music-based comedy.
I’ve performed and sung for a long time, but my popularity increased after seeing the “Sambisa” video. I’m now more often called Angon Sambisa than Yamu.

Yamu Baba: “My First ‘Sambisa’ Music Video Made Me Famous.”
The funny music video “Sambisa” attracted notice because its singer abandoned the girl he loves when she insisted they get married in the dangerous Sambisa forest, which is notorious for being a terrorist camp.
Ibrahim Yamu Baba, also referred to as Yamu Baba or Angon Sambisa (the Sambisa groom), claimed that he became more well-known than he was before because of his love ballad “Sambisa.”
2019 saw the success of the “Sambisa” music video, which stars Baba and Zainab Usman Aliyu.
It depicts Baba extending an invitation to a woman, who then runs away when she accepts and says the wedding should be in the Sambisa forest, where it is known that Boko Haram terrorists had temporarily set up camp.
Building on the first episode’s success, the pair released Sambisa parts two and three.
Baba revealed in an interview with Daily Trust that he has a lengthy history as an actor and that he sings in Kannywood.
Born and raised in Jos, he is originally from Biu in Borno State.
“Even though I’ve been singing and acting for a while, my rise to fame came via the ‘Sambisa’ video.
Because of it, he claimed, “people are now calling me Angon Sambisa (Sambisa groom).
Baba responded, “I don’t have any specific role models in music,” when asked about his role models.
“To God be the glory, I can sing in every genre that I listen to.”
However, I’m focusing more on political subjects in my comedic works.
“As far as filmmaking goes, Ali Nuhu is my hero.
“I worked in the Kannywood industry for approximately 15 years, acting in films such as Rabin Raina, Bakin Mulki, Ana Muslim, and many more that will soon be released, like Gaushi and Sarkakiya.”
However, Baba acknowledged that he only appeared in the video and did not sing the song “Sambisa.”
When asked what his choice is, Baba replied that he enjoys acting and singing and that his major goal is to satisfy his fans.
But to be honest, music—especially since the release of the ‘Sambisa’ video—brings in more money for me.
“We quickly reached over a million views, and ever since, every video we make has received a lot of attention and supportive comments.”
